Pastoralism and shepherds

In the past, sheep farming had a very important role in the local economy. The circumstance – amply illustrated in the tables displayed in this section – is easily explained, as can be read in the presentation text, if only we reflect on the particular conformation of the territory, the surface of which is made up, for more than half, of woods and natural pastures , and on the diversity of the altimetric levels that characterize it, a diversity that made transhumance possible within the same territory of the municipality.

Furthermore, it also gives an account of the density of some particular rural settlements, the sheepfolds, present in the Morano area since the beginning of the nineteenth century, to the illustration of which a special exhibition space is dedicated in the museum.

The section displays tables that document the consistency of the livestock heritage in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the ownership of the farms and its evolution over time, as well as the livestock management systems. The exhibition is completed by a very rich repertoire of photographs, with an extraordinary descriptive capacity, which illustrate the main operations inherent to sheep farming.
