The Museum of Agriculture and Pastoralism in Morano Calabro is housed in the historic Palazzo Salmena. It is a fascinating space dedicated to the history of material culture and the agricultural and pastoral traditions of the region. Founded in the mid-1980s, the museum originated from the expansion of the historical exhibition Farmers and Shepherds in Morano: Between Past and Present, designed by Francesco Mainieri in collaboration with the Cultural Animation Group and under the patronage of the Municipality’s Department of Culture.
This museum offers a distinctive experience thanks to its exhibition style and the variety of materials on display. In addition to physical artifacts, the collection includes archival materials, written records, maps, and historical photographs, enriching the understanding of rural life in the past. Many of these documents have their own museum value, adding further depth to the visitor experience.
The Museum of Agriculture and Pastoralism is the result of extensive interdisciplinary research aimed at fostering a deeper reflection on the agro-pastoral reality of Morano Calabro and the Pollino area. Its mission is to reconstruct the defining traits of these traditions and highlight the authentic values of rural life through precise historical and scientific documentation.
The museum’s collection is extensive and includes valuable historical and documentary testimonies. The exhibition halls are located on the ground floor and basement of Palazzo Salmena, where visitors can explore a wide range of artifacts related to agriculture and pastoralism, with a particular focus on traditional rural culture.
