The Monumental Fountain of Saint Nicholas, located in the heart of Morano Calabro, is a masterpiece carved from local stone, set into an ancient wall. Characterized by three grotesque masks from which water flows, the fountain is enveloped in a captivating atmosphere, further accentuated by the layer of moss and lichens that time has left on its surface.

A Mysterious Inscription: The Dating Error

Upon closer inspection, one can notice a plaque with a date engraved in Roman numerals. However, the inscription contains an error, as the actual construction year of the fountain is 1601. There are many theories surrounding this discrepancy: some believe it to be a simple transcription mistake by the artisan who carved the date, while others suggest a limited understanding of Roman numerals at the time. Rather than diminishing the fountain’s value, this detail only enhances its charm and mystery.

The Moor Symbol on the Monumental Fountain of Saint Nicholas

Another noteworthy feature is the presence of the Moor emblem, the historic symbol of Morano Calabro. However, in contrast to later versions, the three hills, which are part of the modern version of the town’s coat of arms, are absent from this rendition. This suggests an evolution in the town’s emblem, a change that was later confirmed by modifications made a few years later on the Monumental Fountain of Magdalena.
