The Monumental Fountain near the Magdalena Collegiate Church

The Monumental Fountain Magdalene – so called because of its location near the Magdalene Collegiate Church – was built a few years after the San Nicola Fountain (1601) and represents an important historical landmark for Morano Calabro. Constructed in 1604, this fountain features the town’s coat of arms, but with some key differences compared to the one on the San Nicola Fountain.

Differences in Morano Calabro’s Coat of Arms

One of the main differences lies in the redesigned figure of the Moor, which is visibly modified. While the sculpture retains the central element, the three hills, which are now an official part of Morano Calabro’s current coat of arms, are not yet present.

Another significant distinction concerns the date. Unlike the San Nicola Fountain, which displays the date in Roman numerals, the Monumental Fountain Magdalene correctly shows the year 1604 in Arabic numerals, reflecting a stylistic update.

Restoration of the Monumental Fountain of Magdalena

In 2011, the fountain underwent a restoration process that returned the structure to its original splendor. The inauguration ceremony coincided with the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification, making the event particularly meaningful for the Morano Calabro community. The restoration not only preserved this important monument but also celebrated the town’s history and roots.

The Monumental Fountain of Magdalene is, therefore, one of Morano Calabro’s key historical and cultural attractions, symbolizing the evolution of the town through its most iconic emblem.
