Il Nibbio is a non-profit association located in the heart of the Pollino National Park, in the village of Morano Calabro. Its main mission is to fight the degradation and depopulation of the historic center through a socio-cultural development model that combines the restoration of old abandoned houses with the enhancement of local heritage and crafts. The association promotes the culture of hospitality and raises awareness of harmonious coexistence with the natural environment.
Among the initiatives of Il Nibbio, widespread hospitality stands out, with the “Case del Nibbio”, themed accommodations that offer a modern reinterpretation of ancient ways of life, thanks to the recovery of historic buildings near the castle of Morano. In addition, the association manages accommodation facilities such as “Il Convivio del Nibbio” and “Il Giardino del Nibbio”, where it is possible to taste local food and wine products, attend live shows and organize personalized events.
Another significant project is the Naturalistic Museum, a widespread museum that allows you to discover the wonders of the flora and fauna of the Pollino National Park through sections dedicated to mammology, ornithology, entomology and paleontology. The museum also offers educational workshops, proposals for schools and a video library.
Il Nibbio was founded with the aim of creating recreational and educational spaces open to all, with a particular focus on music. An example is the “Purgatorio Music Lab”, a project that involves the recovery of a deconsecrated church to host musical activities, free training for children and cultural events.
The ideals of the association are based on the valorization of the territory, the promotion of local culture and the creation of a welcoming and sustainable community, in harmony with the surrounding natural environment.
Le Case del Nibbio
The “Case del Nibbio” are a project of widespread hospitality in the historic center of Morano Calabro, conceived by the association “Il Nibbio”. This project aims to recover and restore old homes destined for abandonment, transforming them into welcoming accommodations for visitors. Each house is unique and simply furnished, reflecting the local history and culture, and recreating the atmosphere of the ancient “neighborhood” characterized by a strong sense of sharing.
Among the various homes available, some stand out for their peculiarities:
Casa del Vasaio : inspired by the ancient craft of the potter, it offers an environment that recalls the art of ceramics.
Electrician’s House : a sort of “house museum” that displays a variety of vintage electrical objects, celebrating the history of electricity in the village.
Grotta del Fauno : an evocative accommodation that recalls the mythological atmospheres linked to the faun.
Casa del Dolcedorme : it takes its name from the breathtaking panorama that can be admired from its balcony, extending up to the Dolcedorme massif.
Casa dell’Artista : Featuring a combination of handcrafted furnishings and artwork, it offers a glimpse into local artistic life.
Rifugio del Viandante : designed for travellers looking for a place of refreshment and tranquility.
Soffitta dei Ricordi : an accommodation that evokes memories of the past through period objects and furnishings.
Soffitta delle Ginestre : characterised by the presence of decorative elements inspired by brooms, typical plants of the area.
Torretta del Poeta : a romantic and inspiring place, ideal for lovers of poetry and literature.
Casa del Musicista : dedicated to music lovers, with rooms that recall the art of music.
This project not only offers visitors an authentic and immersive experience in local culture, but also contributes to the revitalization of the historic center of Morano Calabro, promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly development.
The Museum
The Naturalistic Museum “Il Nibbio” is a widespread museum located in the historic center of Morano Calabro, at the foot of the Norman-Swabian castle. Housed in restored ancient homes, the museum offers a journey through the flora, fauna and geology of the Pollino National Park, highlighting local biodiversity and the link between man and the environment.
Museum Sections:
Mammology : dedicated to the study of mammals present in the area, with specimens that illustrate the different species and their habitats.
Ornithology : focused on the birds of the Pollino Park, with collections that show the local avifauna variety.
Entomology : explore the world of insects, presenting species typical of the region and their role in ecosystems.
Paleontology : offers a look at the fossils and geological history of the area, highlighting the evolution of the territory over the millennia.
Each section is enriched by dioramas that faithfully recreate natural habitats, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the different settings and better understand the behavior of animals in their context.
